More engineering seats may be filled through counselling: Anna University

The cut-off marks for admission into engineering has risen because more higher secondary students have scored high marks this year. Sources say the cost of engineering seats in self-financing institutions has risen by Rs 1 lakh to Rs 2 lakh since the results came out on Monday. Parents started making enquiries about admission to engineering colleges well before the results came out.

"Last year 1.2 lakh of the 2 lakh seats in engineering colleges were filled through the single window counselling system. This year the number may go up to 1.5 lakh," said Mannar Jawahar, vice-chancellor of Anna University. He said that most of the 486 engineering colleges in the state have applied for additional courses and increased student intake this year. "We will decide on the actual number of engineering seats a month before counselling begins," he added.

This year, 20,339 science students, except those in the vocational groups, have scored more than 1,100 marks of 1,200. This is a 19% increase from the number of students who scored such high marks in 2010. The number of students who have scored 195 of 200 in the core subjects used for the engineering cut-off is 7,414, when compared to the 5,612 who had such high scores in 2010.

"Students and parents should not get discouraged by these figures," said educational consultant Jayaprakash Gandhi. "They could consider second-level colleges that have a good placement history," he added.

Two years ago, IT majors went only to 40 engineering colleges in Chennai for recruitment. But last year, even second-level colleges got big companies to visit them. "IT companies need to recruit a lot of candidates now. They have realised that it is better to take the best students in level two colleges rather than average students from top colleges," Gandhi said.

The key to good placements even in tier 2 colleges is to work hard and ensure that you stand out, says Anna University's Jawahar. "I would advise students in any college to study well for four years. Before joining the college, ensure that the infrastructure, faculty and placement records are good," he said.

Anna University put up last year's cut-off marks and details about admission on its website on Tuesday night. "Parents could check this information, calculate this year's cut-off marks and make an informed decision," Jawahar added.

Close to 31,000 of the 1.92 lakh engineering seats went vacant in 2010. In 2009 more than 51,000 seats went vacant.
