GOP Tea Party Debate: Audience Cheers, Says Society Should Let Uninsured Patient Die

A bit of a startling moment happened near the end of Monday night's CNN debate when a hypothetical question was posed to Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas).

"What do you tell a guy who is sick, goes into a coma and doesn't have health insurance? Who pays for his coverage? Are you saying society should just let him die?" Wolf Blitzer asked.

"Yeah!" several members of the crowd yelled out.

Paul interjected to offer an explanation for how this was, more-or-less, the root choice of a free society. He added that communities and non-government institutions can fill the void that the public sector is currently playing.

"We never turned anybody away from the hospital," he said of his volunteer work for churches and his career as a doctor. "We have given up on this whole concept that we might take care of ourselves, assume responsibility for ourselves ... that's the reason the cost is so high."

The answer may have struck a truly libertarian tone, but it was clearly overshadowed by the members of the crowd who enthusiastically cheered the prospect of letting a man die rather than picking up the tab for his coverage.

Chimpanzees Display Behavior Thought To Be Unique To Humans (VIDEO)

Chimpanzees may be more generous than we thought.

Chimps spontaneously displaying empathy by consoling each other after fights and sharing food has been documented by scientists. However, altruistic behavior thought to be unique to humans was shown in previous research to only occur when the chimps were tricked or pressured, the Daily Mail reports.

A new report has found they are more giving than previous studies have credited them for. "Spontaneous Prosocial Choice By Chimpanzees," published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, reports that chimpanzees are as co-operative as their human cousins, particularly when their partners are patient.

Study leader Dr. Horner told The New York Times the study suggests that rather than altruism being a behavior unique to humans, it is the number of instances in comparison to other mammals that is different.

"We were excited to find female after female [chimpanzee] chose the option that gave both her and her partner food," Dr. Horner told the Daily Mail.

The study found the chimps were much less likely to share the food if their partner kicked up a fuss.

Dr. Horner told LiveScience: "For me, the most important finding is that like us, chimpanzees take into account the needs and wishes of others."

Researcher Frans de Waal said empathy had also been found in capuchin monkeys, marmosets and tamarins, and he expected to find it in dogs and rats as well.

"Since empathy is an old mammalian trait, there is no reason why the sort of altruism we describe should be unique for the primates," de Waal told Discovery News.

Not everyone supports the findings. The New York Times reports that Michael Tomasello at the Max Planck Institute feels the study is poorly designed. Having conducted his own experiment, he came to a different conclusion: “Chimps help others, but what they do not do is give up food themselves so others can have it,” he said. “So they are prosocial when it is not costly, but when it is, not so much.”

An increasing number of studies are showing that other animals share many similar traits to humans. For example, this year, studies have shown that monkeys doubt themselves, and they also show regret and disappointment, just like humans.

Female Curator Beaten By Police In Art Gallery

A female curator was allegedly beaten for 'indecent' behavior by a police station supervisor in Lahore, Pakistan on August 2, at an art gallery owned by well-known Pakistani architect Nayyar Ali Dada. The offending behavior included wearing sleeveless clothing and interacting with men.

According to the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, the officer and his subordinates entered the gallery without a warrant and began harassing female guests. The curator was "brutally assaulted," and, according to an Express Tribune blog post, "her colleagues who came to her rescue were taken to the police station and booked under an obsolete ordinance."

Nairang Art Gallery is known locally as a destination for left-leaning intellectuals, the sort of clientele that is generally less inclined to strictly observe Sharia law. Zee News quotes eminent Urdu writer Intizar Hussain, who said, "This is the only place left in Lahore where intellectuals can sit for a while."

So far, no action has been taken against the policeman, the Station House Officer of Lahore's Shadman police station, though it has been condemned by human rights groups and local commentators.

Rescuers saved a stranded baby whale in Australia's Gold Coast on Monday, helping it get back to sea.

The baby whale had become separated from its mother. Rescuers dug a hole in the sand to allow the whale to get off the beach once the tide came in.

It can't be easy for a wrestler from Northern Michigan University to go viral, but Ellis Coleman did just that at the Junior World Championships when he pulled off one of the more ridiculous wrestling takedowns you'll ever see.

Coleman went full-airborne at the whistle, flying over Mehdi Chooli Zeidvand of Iran and flipping him on his head before he could even tell what happened. Apparently, the move is called "the flying squirrel."

Not surprisingly Coleman went on to win the match, and eventually was awarded the bronze medal in his weight division.

Gabrielle Giffords Returns to Congress for Debt Ceiling Vote (Photos & Video)

Seven months after she was shot in the head by a gunman in Tucson, Ariz., Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) made a surprise and emotional return to the House floor on Monday, casting a vote in favor of a bill to raise the nation's debt ceiling.

Giffords entered the chamber to sustained, standing applause, shaking hands with colleagues whom she had not seen since that January day. Her vote, a sideshow to the far more important and compelling personal drama, was in favor of the bill, which passed through the chamber by a margin of 269 to 161.

“I have closely followed the debate over our debt ceiling and have been deeply disappointed at what’s going on in Washington,” Giffords said, in a statement from her office. “After weeks of failed debate in Washington, I was pleased to see a solution to this crisis emerge. I strongly believe that crossing the aisle for the good of the American people is more important than party politics. I had to be here for this vote. I could not take the chance that my absence could crash our economy.”

Giffords' office tweeted word of her return to Washington after the vote had begun. And as she showed up on the floor -- smiling and with her hair cut short -- the attention of lawmakers drifted from the vote tally to her presence. Her office, in a statement, noted that in December 2009 and again in February 2010, she had objected to raising the nation's debt limit. This vote, the statement added, "was substantially different, with the strength of the U.S. economy hanging in the balance."

After the vote was cast, Giffords received multiple additional rounds of applause, as House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) called her "the personification of courage."

"Her presence here in the chamber as well as her service throughout her career in Congress, brings honor to this chamber," Pelosi said. "Thank you, Gabby."

Pelosi said she knew a Giffords visit "was possible" for a couple of days, but she urged the Arizona Democrat not to come unless she felt up for it.

"I did not encourage her to," Pelosi told reporters. "I told her first things first. But she was very eager to come."

Pelosi said she found out for sure that Giffords was returning from her chief of staff, John Lawrence, who is close with Giffords' husband Mark Kelly. When she saw Giffords come in, she said no words were exchanged as they greeted each other. Just "girl hugs," Pelosi said.

"Suffice it to say, it was one of the most thrilling moments to see this heroine return home, to the House. And to do so at such a dramatic time."

Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.), one of Giffords' closest personal friends and one of the people who escorted Giffords into the chamber, said she was beside herself when she heard the House erupt into cheers as Giffords walked in for the first time since the January 8 shooting.

"The reaction in the chamber was the most enthusiastic, exuberant, exhilarating -- I mean we were all crying -- thrilled -- you know, we just knew she would make a triumphant return," Wasserman Schultz said, becoming visibly upset.

"It always felt like there were so many doubters and skeptics, but never doubt Gabby Giffords' determination. This is the first of many votes she's going to pass."

Wasserman Schultz, who is also the Democratic National Committee chairwoman, said she knew "sometime yesterday" that Giffords' visit was happening. She said she spoke late last night to Giffords' husband, Mark Kelly, about the plan. Giffords had been following the debt limit vote from Tucson and "was ready to come and do the pivotal vote if she needed to," Wasserman Schultz said.

"At the end of the day, it was probably the most important vote we're going to cast this Congress. She wanted to make sure that her constituents were represented."

Vice President Joe Biden came to the Capitol to see Giffords, after being tipped off by Pelosi that she would be in attendance.

"I told her she was now a member of the cracked-head club like me, with two craniotomies," Biden told reporters. "You know what I mean? It was just so good to see her. But that's a private conversation."

Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-Ohio) found out about her return about an hour before the vote and helped to escort her into the chamber.

Assistant Democratic Leader James Clyburn (D-S.C.) said he found out that Giffords would show for the vote when he saw her, hinting that Pelosi and others in the know played it close to the vest.

"I just said, 'I love you, glad to have you back, great to see you,'" he said. "I only found out when I saw her. [It was] a little emotional."

Kirstie Alley does, and she brought notes of several of his cracks at her expense for her appearance on his show.

Letterman said he felt he had her implied approval, since she'd said "it's okay" about them on an earlier appearance. "I said it's okay, so that was like go ahead and tell 50 of them?" she asked.

He really had no come back for this, though he tried. "We do love you and if you were skinny we would tell jokes about you-- No, probably not."

Even if this exchange was in jest, and it surely was at least on some level, it does raise an interesting question about why weight joke are so acceptable in a society that's so sensitive about jokes that single out any other specific groups of people.

Baby Okapi Welcomed At Antwerp Zoo (VIDEO)

Get ready to do some serious awwwww-ing. A baby okapi from Antwerp Zoo in Belgium has just taken her first steps in public -- and it was caught on video.

Meet Mchawi, the newest member of the okapi family at the zoo.

Since okapis are a threatened member of the giraffe family, her birth and first steps are doubly special for her caregivers, as well as the eager observers.

Fun fact: The tongue of the okapi is long enough for it to wash its eyelids and clean its ears inside and out. It is also a blueish-grey color, much like the giraffes. But, according to the San Diego Zoo, the striped legs of an okapi make it also appear to be related to a zebra.

According to PBS Online, the okapi lives in protected rain forests in northern Zaire, but is still threatened by poaching and habitat loss from human settlement.

Forget the "Edge of Glory," this time Lady Gaga has gone way over the edge. At a concert in Sydney on Wednesday, Lady Gaga rolled out (literally) for a jaw-dropping performance. But fans weren't wide-eyed because of Mother Monster's epic lyrics or awkwardly awesome dance moves. No, fans were scraping their chins off the floor for quite a different reason -- Gaga took the stage in a wheelchair.
Sure, Lady Gaga hasn't risen to global superstar status for playing it safe, but did Gaga's latest stunt go a little too far? According to fans, it did. After her performance, while leaving a Sydney club, Gaga and her entourage were egged by fans who thought her disability bit was offensive rather than outrageous, according to the UK's Metro Online. Although Gaga wasn't directly hit with any of the eggs, her posse wasn't so lucky.
But this isn't the first time the "Born This Way" singer has referenced wheelchair disabilities in her concerts or music videos. At the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, Gaga hired an able-bodied dancer to join her "Paparazzi" routine -- only catch, the dancer would be performing in a decked-out wheelchair. Gaga once again rolled out in a wheelchair in her "Paparazzi" video after being pushed over a railing by video boyfriend, Alexander Skarsgard.
Leave it to Gaga to make things come full circle for us. First she hatched from an egg at the 2011 VMAs and now she's the target of the same food group.

Mumbai Explosions: Intelligence Agencies Received No Warnings Or Clues In Market Attacks

MUMBAI (Reuters) - Indian intelligence agencies received no warnings before the three bomb blasts that killed 18 people in Mumbai, the biggest attack since Pakistani-based militants rampaged through the financial hub in 2008, a top official said on Thursday.

Suspicion however fell on the Indian Mujahideen, a shadowy home-grown militant group known for its city-to-city bombing campaigns using small explosive devices planted in restaurants, at bus stops and on busy streets.

"There was no intelligence regarding a militant attack in Mumbai. That is not a failure of intelligence agencies," Home Minister Palaniappan Chidambaram told a news conference.

"Know that perpetrators have attacked and have worked in a very very clandestine manner. Maybe it's a very small group, maybe they did not communicate with each other."

He said it was too early to point the finger at a particular group, but said the "coordinated terror attacks" could be in retaliation to a number of plots recently stopped by police or the arrests, including from the Indian Mujahideen.

The Indian Mujahideen have been accused of having ties with Pakistani militant groups fighting Indian rule in Kashmir.

Venus Williams Avoids Upset And Reaches The Third Round Of Wimbledon

WIMBLEDON, England — Five-time champion Venus Williams rallied to defeat Kimiko Date-Krumm 6-7 (6), 6-3, 8-6 and reach the third round at Wimbledon.
Williams trailed 5-1 in the first set Wednesday and saved three set points before holding her own set point at 6-5. Williams saved four more in the tiebreaker before losing the set.
The 23rd-seeded American missed nearly five months of action this year with a hip injury, but she returned last week at Eastbourne.
The 40-year-old Date-Krumm became the second oldest woman to reach the second round at Wimbledon in the Open era when she defeated Katie O'Brien in her opening match.

Andrew Breitbart Takes Over Anthony Weiner's Press Conference (VIDEO)

NEW YORK -- On Monday afternoon, in the Sheraton Hotel's New York West ballroom, it felt, at times, like there were two press conferences happening at once. One featured the spectacle of a teary-eyed and emotionally wrenched Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.) apologizing for his online indiscretions. The other showcased a combative Andrew Breitbart doing his best to hijack the moment.
The conservative media provocateur spoke before, after and during Rep. Weiner's admission of sending sexually charged emails to six different women.
It was supposed to be Weiner's press conference -- so why was Breitbart on the stage? He had decided to attend, he told the scores of assembled press corps members, partly because his hotel was "coincidentally" located three blocks away.
But, Breitbart also noted, "I'm here to watch myself be vindicated." He attempted to turn Weiner's press conference into a battle in his ongoing war against the so-called mainstream media, criticizing outlets that included Salon and The Daily Kos.
No one from Weiner's office pre-screened the press at the sometimes-chaotic news conference, which was held with about an hour's advance notice. At one point, before Weiner had taken the stage, someone from the crowd -- it was difficult to tell if they were a member of the media or just an onlooker -- asked Breitbart to break from a press huddle he was holding on the side of the ballroom and walk up to the podium at the front of the room set aside for Weiner.
"If he's paying for this I find this to be a tad rude," Breitbart said, and then went ahead, at 3:58 p.m.
Weiner had scheduled his conference to start at 4 p.m. When people tuned in, though, they saw not the Congressman, but Breitbart, who took questions for approximately 13 minutes before leaving the podium. Fox News reported that Weiner's aides ran down the hall to inform him that Breitbart was there.

Breitbart defended Big Government's reporting on Weiner, as well as on past stories, saying his website "didn't get into conjecture."
He expressed particular ire toward the online magazine Salon, and claimed that Weiner was "complicit" in a media campaign blaming Breitbart for the whole debacle -- and thus owed the media entrepreneur an apology.
"Given the fact that Congressman Weiner made much of last week about trying to blame me, and much of the left-wing media tried to make last week about blaming me, including claiming that I outed the name of the girl in Seattle that he sent the tweet to, which is false, and also claiming that I was the hacker, I felt that I needed to set the record straight," he told Fox News in a phone interview.

Aside from personal vindication, Breitbart said on the stage, "I'm doing this to save his family, okay? And if this guy wants to start fighting with me again, I have this photo."
Breitbart was referring to an X-rated photo of Weiner that he purportedly has in his possession yet refrained from publishing Monday. Someone from the gaggle asked Breitbart if he was extorting the congressman, and he denied that he was.
After a few more minutes, Breitbart left the podium. He filtered into and out of the ballroom, taking calls and talking to a number of media outlets.
Once Weiner had taken the stage, he was soon asked whether he owed Breitbart an apology. "I'm right here," Breitbart said, and shortly thereafter, Weiner did apologize.
By then, Breitbart had walked to the back of the room for more interviews. He was still standing there, speaking with "Inside Edition," as Weiner choked up again, toward the end of his press conference, over the pain he had caused his wife and family.

'The Daily Show' With Jon Stewart vs Tim Tebow To Promote His New Autobiography (VIDEO)

Denver Broncos’ quarterback Tim Tebow appeared on “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” Tuesday evening to promote his new autobiographical book, “Through My Eyes.”

Tebow speaks about the player-organized practices in Colorado that he and other Broncos are participating in, lead by veteran safety Brian Dawkins as well as the player-organized workouts in Florida with many Denver Broncos teammates, as well.

Jon Stewart made light of Tebow’s writing an autobiography at such a young age of 23, Stewart said, “A lot of people might say you want to wait until you are 24 to write an autobiography.”

Tebow takes it in stride and opens up about his youth growing up briefly in the Philippines with his parents, who were missionaries there. That experience with his parents led him to create his own foundation that supports around 600 orphans, the Tim Tebow Foundation.

To which Stewart jokingly quips to Tebow, “Wow, you seem like a real asshole.” Stewart, goes on to state in all seriousness, “I mean, you read this book, you do such nice things.”

Tebow will be signing copies of his book at the LoDo, Tattered Cover book store in Denver on Saturday, June 4, 4 p.m. - 6 p.m., full details of the event can be found here.

Microsoft unveils Windows 8 (video) -- Update by Engadget

We're live from Microsoft Windows president Steven Sinofsky's keynote at D9, and there's something rather exciting on stage -- a pair of experimental Windows 8 dev boards running an OS that looks very much like Windows Phone 7's Metro UI. All Things D actually sat down with the man earlier today and got a sneak peek at what to expect starting with the live tiled screen you see above -- and yes, like Windows Phone 7, this OS is designed for touch.

There'll be two kinds of applications for Windows 8, one that runs in a traditional desktop, and the other pseudo-mobile apps based on HTML5 and Javascript, but both environments -- rather, the entire OS -- have been designed from the ground up for touchscreen use. Keyboard and mouse will still be options for both sets of programs, but there are multiple virtual sets of keys for different form factors, including a split keyboard for vertical slate use. Multitasking is simply a matter of swiping running apps into the center of the screen, and you can pull windows partway to "snap" them in place alongside other windows -- even mixing and matching traditional desktop programs with web apps simultaneously (like Twitter alongside your spreadsheet). There's a new version of Internet Explorer 10 (which runs Silverlight) and an app store built into the touchscreen interface, along with integrated services like Office 365. Microsoft says the new OS will run on laptops, tablets and desktops when it appears -- whenever that might be.

All Things D didn't have any details on when we'll get pricing or availability, but we're looking at some Intel Atom-based demo units on stage right now, and Microsoft says it will have ARM designs (the OS will support NVIDIA, TI and Qualcomm) viewable on the Computex show floor, and more will be revealed at the Build Windows developer conference in September. We should note that "Windows 8" is just a codename for what we're seeing here -- "we'll figure out the real name in due time," Sinofsky told the crowd -- but we don't see much harm in calling it Windows 8 for now.

13-Year-Old Hamza Al-Khatib, Syria Boy ,Brutally Killed In Custody Video

13-year-old Syrian boy detained by government forces has been brutally killed, his wounds displayed in a shocking video. The boy, identified as Hamza al-Khateeb, was shot, burned, and had his penis cut off when his body was returned to his family.
“We will go out from every home, from every district to express our anger” over the killing, actvists wrote on their Facebook page which carries a picture of the boy, according to the AFP. “A month had passed by with his family not knowing where he is, or if or when will he be released. He was released to his family as a dead body. Upon examining his body, the signs of torture are very clear.”

Jennifer Lopez : Greatest Letdown Was Her Fashion Lines

Jennifer Lopez sat down with the New York Times to talk about being the nice judge on "American Idol," her "not-so-great" movies and the number of outfits she lays out for her kids and husband each day (three).

She also revealed her greatest career letdown -- her fashion collections:

"That was sad for me," she said, as she pushed a strand of stray hair back in place. "I just felt like I never got a fair chance to do it right. And on top of it, I felt like I was trapped in a situation I couldn't get out of, and my name was stamped on things that I didn't believe in."

As for what went wrong -- the sportswear line, which had its debut in 2001, was criticized for being overpriced and cheaply made -- Ms. Lopez said she "didn't understand the business well enough" and didn't have enough creative control. More crucially, she didn't seem to understand how to translate her iconic red carpet style -- the navel-plunging green Versace gown she wore to the Grammy Awards in 2000; the mink eyelashes -- to an off-the-rack business.

But practice makes perfect, right? Jenny from the block recently re-concentrated her efforts with a lifestyle brand for Kohl's. Tommy Hilfiger, who's working alongside J.Lo on her wares, told the Times, "The difference this time around is that Jennifer is fully engaged with a company that is professionally staffed to really develop anything she wants, from towels to knee-high suede boots," adding, "She lives fashion."

And it sounds like a match made in celeb/fashion collab. heaven. Lopez previously told UsMagazine.com, "One of the exciting things about it is that they wanted something new. They need other things that are a different style, a different sensibility and that's why they came to us."

Cutoff For Wearing A Miniskirt : Survey Shows 35 (VIDEO)

Over 35? Boy, do we have some news for you.A recent survey out of Britain revealed that no one wants to see you in a miniskirt. Period.

More than 2,000 women took the poll, which administered by Diet Chef, some sort of self esteem-boosting prepared-meals site. The findings show that age 47 is the cutoff for wearing a bikini, 61 for swimsuits altogether, and at 51, you can skip both the stilettos and the ponytails.

Apparently, ladies can slip into their Uggs until they've spent 45 years on planet Earth -- that's four and a half decades worth of crimes of fashion committed by sporting the sheepskin boots.

However, these aren't hard-and-fast rules. Caron Leckie, a nutritionist for Diet Chef, told the Daily Mail, "It's up to individuals to choose when they should stop wearing certain items. ... Saying that, everyone wants to look the best they can and now is the prime time to get in shape for summer."
