Annie Le Murderer Sentenced to 44 years in Prison
Raymond Clark III, the lab technician who pleaded guilty to killing Yale University graduate student Annie Le in September 2009, is expected to be sentenced to 44 years in prison in Superior Court on Friday.
Several members of Le's family are scheduled to travel from Le's home state of California for the sentencing, Senior Assistant State's Attorney David Strollo said Wednesday. It was unclear which family members planned to speak at the hearing.
Le was beaten, strangled and stuffed into a wall of a Yale University research center. In March, Clark, 26, pleaded guilty to Le's murder and a charge presented for the first time at the plea hearing — criminal attempt to commit first-degree sexual assault — suggesting for the first time a possible motive for the crime.

The guilty plea to the charge of criminal attempt to commit sexual assault was entered under the Alford doctrine, meaning that Clark did not admit guilt but conceded that there was probably enough evidence to convict him at trial. Clark previously faced charges of murder and felony murder.
The plea deal averted what was expected to be a dramatic and widely publicized trial.
Prosecutors have said the evidence against Clark was voluminous, including thousands of pages of police reports, hundreds of pieces of evidence, and more than 1,000 photographs. Documents show that police linked Clark to the killing through DNA, fingerprints, key-card tracking of Clark's movements in the Yale building, video, other physical evidence, and statements that Clark made to police.
Le was last seen alive the morning of Sept. 8, 2009, entering the Yale Animal Research Center, a state-of-the-art secure research building at the Yale School of Medicine complex. Le, 24, a third-year doctoral student in pharmacology from Placerville, Calif., did research at the center. Clark took care of the lab animals there.
After Le's roommate reported her missing, authorities searched for Le for five days, mostly focusing their search on the research building. At one point, authorities suspected Le might be a runaway bride because she disappeared days before she was to be married.
Police found Le's partly decomposed body on Sept. 13, 2009, inside a building wall, covered in insulation. Her bra was pushed up toward her head. Her panties were pulled down to her feet. Surgical gloves covered her hands, although her left thumb was exposed. Her jaw and collarbone were broken while she was still alive, prosecutors said.

James Arness, a bigger-than-life actor who kept the peace as Marshal Matt Dillon on 'Gunsmoke' for its 20-year run, died Friday of natural causes at his home in Brentwood, Calif., his family told the Los Angeles Times. He was 88.
'Gunsmoke' debuted on CBS in 1955 and ran until 1975, in the process making Arness one of the more enduring stars on television and the Matt Dillon character one of its most beloved and trusted.
The 6 foot 7 Arness towered over the cast, including Dillon's deputy, Chester, played by Dennis Weaver. Other supporting stars included Amanda Blake as Kitty and Milburn Stone as Doc Adams.
By the time Arness got the part of Dillon, he had been a WWII combat veteran and appeared in several films, most notably the science-fiction classics 'Them!' and 'The Thing From Another World,' in which he played an alien.
The Minneapolis native's younger brother, actor Peter Graves, who died last October, encouraged him to get into acting. He cut his Western teeth in four John Wayne film, including 'Hondo' and 'Big Jim McLain.'
It was Wayne that recommended Arness for 'Gunsmoke' and an on-air endorsement from the film great himself. "I knew there was only one man to play in it, James Arness," Wayne told viewers (watch video below). "He's a young fella and may be new to some of you. But I've worked with him, and I predict he'll be a big star. So you might as well get used to him, like you've had to get used to me."
The role of Marshal Dillon proved a complex one and became a focus of the show, but Arness is said to have pushed producers to move the focus off him and onto the large ensemble cast.
When 'Gunsmoke' ended in 1975, appeared a string of TV shows including the miniseries 'How The West Was Won' and in the early 1980s, turned leading man again in cop drama 'McClain's Law.'
He brought Matt Dillon back for five 'Gunsmoke' movies starting in 1987's 'Gunsmoke: Return to Dodge.'
Arness is survived by his wife, Janet, two sons and six grandchildren.

Springfield Tornado 2011: Twister Touches Down In Massachusetts (VIDEO). UPDATE [9:22 p.m. ET]
The number of dead rose to three from Wednesday’s tornadoes as a dozen-storm ravaged communities launched recovery efforts and Massachusetts congressional delegation appealed to the White House for disaster relief.
In a letter to President Obama, U.S. Sen. John Kerry, U.S. Rep. Richard E. Neal and six delegation members called for a presidential disaster declaration needed to steer millions in federal aid to homeowners and businesses in central and Western Massachusetts.
The appeal came 18 hours after Gov. Deval Patrick declared a state of emergency after two late-afternoon tornadoes rained destruction on a dozen communities from Westfield to Sturbridge.
A third death - involving a West Springfield mother killed while shielding her 15-year old daughter in a bathtub - was confirmed Thursday, in addition to a West Springfield motorist crushed by a tree and woman camping in Brimfield.
Area hospitals treated about 80 patients suffering from minor injuries to lightning strikes and trauma; at Baystate Medical Center, two required surgery and a third, an assistant district attorney, remains in serious condition after being struck by debris. No estimates have been provided for the total cost of the storms, but Kerry said he expects the figure will be astronomical.
“I don’t think there’s any question we’re in the tens of millions. Where it goes from there it’s too early to tell. But the bottom line is: I think help will be there,” Kerry said while touring Monson with Patrick and other elected officials.
Berkshire Bank announced it will match all donations to the American Red Cross up to $10,000. The bank’s Springfield and East Longmeadow branches will reopen Friday after being closed Thursday, bank officials announced.
Power outages remained a problem, with 22,000 National Grid customers in Brimfield, Monson and surrounding communities waiting for electricity to return; 13,306 Western Massachusetts Electric customers, mostly in Springfield’s Sixteen Acres and East Forest Park neighborhoods, were also without power Thursday night, down from 17,000 immediately after the storms.
Power should be restored to Western Massachusetts Electric customers by the weekend, said spokesman Frank J. Poirot.
Marcy L. Reed, president of National Grid, Massachusetts, said that workers have been on the job non-stop to restore electricity after tornadoes swept into the region Wednesday night causing widespread devastation.
She said 72 percent of Monson is without power.
“Our hearts go out to everyone affected by these devastating storms, especially the families of the four people who lost their lives yesterday,” Reed said.
She cautioned that people who are using generators should place them outside.
As the scope of the storm damage became apparent Thursday, communities turned to emergency workers, to government agencies and each other for help in rebuilding.
In Springfield, the city opened shelters for displaced and homeless people on Thursday at the Greenleaf Community Center on Parker Street in Sixteen Acres, and at Central High School on Roosevelt Avenue.
Approximately 210 people stayed at the MassMutual Center Wednesday night, and were being aided by the American Red Cross and others, said Thomas T. Walsh, the city’s communications director. They were being moved to the new shelters, with transportation provided by the Pioneer Valley Transit Authority.
Cathedral High School, left heavily damaged by the tornado, has rescheduled its graduation and two other events, with all events moved to next week.
The Cathedral graduation exercises will be June 10 at 6 p.m., at St. Michael’s Cathedral on State Street in Springfield.
Cathedral’s Class Night ceremonies will be June 8, at 7 p.m., at Veritas Auditorium, Elms College, in Chicopee. A Baccalaureate Mass will be Thursday, at 7 p.m., at St. Michael’s Cathedral.
Alan J. Ingram, superintendent of the Springfield public schools, said that two elementary schools were too heavily damaged to reopen this school year.
Ingram said Mary A. Dryden Veterans Memorial School at 190 Surrey Road and Elias Brookings School at 367 Hancock Street will not be able to reopen.
All other public schools should reopen the beginning of next week, Ingram said.

City, state and federal emergency personnel, meanwhile, have “pretty much” completed their primary search for injured or trapped victims and have begun a more thorough secondary search, Fire Department spokesman Dennis G. Leger said.

Delaney said neighbors should help neighbors as emergency personnel continue to clear the streets. “We are clearing the streets first, the houses are secondary,” he said.
Delaney said literally hundreds of building have been damaged throughout the city and numerous streets remain closed.
Leger said the collapse or re-collapse of damaged structures has been a concern for emergency personnel. “If it looks really shaky, they are sending in dogs, if it doesn’t they are sending in people,” Leger said.
Leger stressed that residents clearing off their properties need to be aware of their surroundings. “Don’t touch the wires, people need to be very cautious about that,” Leger said. “This is when people get hurt, after the fact.”

All off-duty police personnel were called to duty Wednesday night and the officers, working in teams of six to 12, literally went house to house searching for the trapped and injured, Delaney said.
“We had people trapped in their cellars, people trapped in their cars,” Delaney said.
A number of neighborhoods were impassable by vehicle and the officers had to go on foot. “Literally, police officers could not get to East Forest Park because every avenue was blocked off by trees and downed lines,” Delaney said.
Police had to gain access to the East Forest Park neighborhood through East Longmeadow, Delaney said.
Delaney said emergency personnel set up a command post last night in the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame parking lot.

The MMA fighter appears in a full-frontal nude photo shared with all of his Twitter followers on Thursday (May 2). While the picture appears to be a self portrait taken on his cell phone, Ortiz insists that he wasn't the one to release it. He is not, however, denying that the image is real.
Moments after the photo surfaced, Ortiz removed it and tweeted: "Some hack my f***ing phone." Still, he wasn't quick enough to stop several Internet outlets from getting a hold of the mirror shot.

Microsoft unveils Windows 8 (video) -- Update by Engadget
We're live from Microsoft Windows president Steven Sinofsky's keynote at D9, and there's something rather exciting on stage -- a pair of experimental Windows 8 dev boards running an OS that looks very much like Windows Phone 7's Metro UI. All Things D actually sat down with the man earlier today and got a sneak peek at what to expect starting with the live tiled screen you see above -- and yes, like Windows Phone 7, this OS is designed for touch.
There'll be two kinds of applications for Windows 8, one that runs in a traditional desktop, and the other pseudo-mobile apps based on HTML5 and Javascript, but both environments -- rather, the entire OS -- have been designed from the ground up for touchscreen use. Keyboard and mouse will still be options for both sets of programs, but there are multiple virtual sets of keys for different form factors, including a split keyboard for vertical slate use. Multitasking is simply a matter of swiping running apps into the center of the screen, and you can pull windows partway to "snap" them in place alongside other windows -- even mixing and matching traditional desktop programs with web apps simultaneously (like Twitter alongside your spreadsheet). There's a new version of Internet Explorer 10 (which runs Silverlight) and an app store built into the touchscreen interface, along with integrated services like Office 365. Microsoft says the new OS will run on laptops, tablets and desktops when it appears -- whenever that might be.
All Things D didn't have any details on when we'll get pricing or availability, but we're looking at some Intel Atom-based demo units on stage right now, and Microsoft says it will have ARM designs (the OS will support NVIDIA, TI and Qualcomm) viewable on the Computex show floor, and more will be revealed at the Build Windows developer conference in September. We should note that "Windows 8" is just a codename for what we're seeing here -- "we'll figure out the real name in due time," Sinofsky told the crowd -- but we don't see much harm in calling it Windows 8 for now.

Springfield MA Tornado (Live Television Footage)
Tornadoes swept through western Massachusetts this evening downing trees and utility polls, and in the city of Springfield caused significant damage to a house and apartment building, according to several Massachusetts-based news agencies.
One death has been reported, along with several injuries, according to the news organizations.
The Springfield Republican began tracking the storm and reporting its whereabouts at 4:35 p.m. when one of its reporters saw and heard the funnel headed toward the Main Street area of the city.
Multiple twisters touched down in the city's south end and downtown area, according to WWLP.com. One death has been associated with a twister; a man who was driving his car in West Springfield was killed when a tree fell on top of his vehicle, one of the city's police captains told News22.
Gov. Deval Patrick has declared a state of emergency for the Commonwealth and has posted information on what to do in case of a tornado.

“We will go out from every home, from every district to express our anger” over the killing, actvists wrote on their Facebook page which carries a picture of the boy, according to the AFP. “A month had passed by with his family not knowing where he is, or if or when will he be released. He was released to his family as a dead body. Upon examining his body, the signs of torture are very clear.”

The Eagles and Argentina were paired in the same group at the 2010 World Cup, with the latter beating the former 1-0. This friendly match v Argentina is regarded by many as new Eagles coach Samson Siasia’s first major test in charge of the national squad.
Despite the absence of Lionel Messi, Carlos Tevez, Javier Mascherano and Angel di Maria, Argentina still possess an excellent squad capable to beating the best on their day. Siasia is expected to field a strong lineup consisting of all his major stars as the Eagles aim to go into Saturday’s African qualifier against Ethiopia on a high.

One of Capitol Hill’s most media-friendly people, New York Rep. Anthony Weiner, seems to be souring on the subject of his Twitter account, brushing off questions about his Twitter feed and the photo of a man in his underwear that was sent from that account. “I’m not going to talk about this anymore,” Weiner said Tuesday afternoon, in an exchange with journalists CNN described as “angry.”
It was clearly an unusually testy encounter for the usually cool and camera-friendly Democratic congressman. Weiner insisted the story that blew up over the Memorial Day weekend was nothing but a “distraction,” and that he would have nothing more to say about it, despite reporters repeated questions. “If I was giving a speech to 45,000 people and someone stood up and heckled in the back I wouldn’t spend three days talking to him. I’m going to get back to the conversation I care about,” he said.
With one reporter comparing the alleged hacking of Weiner’s Twitter account to a cyber attack on a member of Congress, Weiner was unmoved. “I’m going to return to the things I care about,” he said. “I’ve participated in the story a couple of days now. Given comments on it. This is a distraction and I’m not going to let it distract me.”
