The Dallas Mavericks have finally taken the lead in the NBA Finals series over the Miami Heat, taking Game 5 112-103. With the win, the Mavericks head to Game 6 in Miami needing just one win to take the 2011 NBA title. They have two games to do it but both will be in the Heat home court.

Dirk Nowitzki again took the lead for the Mavericks, scoring 29 points including the go-ahead basket with 2:45 remaining. And just as he asked before Game 4, Noxitzki was ably supported by his team. Terry scored 21 points and J.J. Barea had 17 for the Mavs, Jason Kidd and Tyson Chandler both finished with 13 points.

Fans had been predicting a prolific night for Dallas in the finals series just as they had done in the playoffs. But the defense put on by Miami in the first four games put a cap on the team’s production. Finally, it happened. And just in time. Had Miami won Game 5, they would be bringing an insurmountable psychological advantage as the NBA Finals series goes back to Florida.

On Miami’s side, LeBron put in 17 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. Dwayne Wade came up with 23 while Chris Bosh had 19 points and 10 rebounds for the Heat.

LeBron James called this game “now or never” and now, it really is now or never for them. The Miami Heat head home for two games with history against them: In the 26 previous finals that were tied 2-2, the Game 5 winner won 19 of them. (VIDEO CREDIT: NBA.com)
